The main types of gear pumps can be divided as follows:

Internal gear pumps:
In internal gear pumps, the input gear (internal gear) is located inside the casing and engages with the output gear (external gear). These pumps are often used in high viscosity applications.

Q: Can a gear pump be used for water?

A: Units rely on fluids with lubricating properties such as oils, fats, paint etc. As water does not lubricate, gear pumps should not be used with water.

Q: Can a gear pump cavitate?

A: Cavitation is possible in all types of pump. Whilst it may seem rare in gear pumps due to them often being ran at slow speeds, it is still possible due to insufficient suction pressure.

Q: Are gear pumps reversible?

A: Yes they are however any bypass valve fitted will only operate in one direction.

Q: Are gear pumps self priming?

A: Yes, Gear Pumps can self prime up to around 8M

Q: How are such pumps selected?

A: They are often selected based on the fluid, flow required and pressure requirements of an application. The higher the viscosity of a fluid, the slower a pump must be ran limiting the flow produced by certain models, with other versions being limited by fluid temperature, viscosity and the pressure they can produce.

A: Figures vary by model but they can handle fluids up to around 55,000cst.

Q: When is a bypass valve required and how do I know I need one?

A: An integral bypass is designed to protect the pump and system from overpressure for small periods of time. An integral bypass is only a temporary solution and cannot operate indefinitely, an additional external bypass that runs back to the fluid source tank is always recommended as a more permanent solution.

Q: When are heating jackets used?

A: Heating jackets are used to prevent liquid within pump heads from solidifying such as bitumen and also to maintain the temperature of fluids such as in food transfer applications. An alternative to heating jackets is to use heat tracing.
