How Radial Piston Hydraulic Motors Work
The operation of a radial piston hydraulic motor can be explained in several steps:
Pressurized Fluid Enters
When hydraulic fluid enters the motor through the inlet port, it is directed by the valve plate into specific cylinders that contain pistons at a certain point in their stroke cycle (typically when they are near or at their innermost position). The high pressure of the fluid forces these pistons to move outward against a cam or crankshaft.
Piston Movement Generates Torque
As each piston moves outward from its cylinder due to fluid pressure, it pushes against the camshaft or crankshaft, generating torque (rotational force). The camshaft translates this linear motion into rotational motion by rotating around its axis.
Continuous Rotation
As one set of pistons completes their outward stroke and begins to retract (as fluid pressure is released through the outlet port), another set of pistons receives pressurized fluid and starts their outward stroke, continuing the rotation process smoothly. This alternating sequence ensures that torque is generated continuously and efficiently.
Fluid Exits Through Outlet Port
After transferring its energy to move the pistons, the hydraulic fluid exits each cylinder through an outlet port controlled by the valve plate and returns to the reservoir or system for recirculation.
